Breastfeeding and Lactation Education
Lactation Education
At Bluestem Health in Lincoln, Nebraska, we believe breast is best if you are able to nurse. We are here to support you.
According to the World Health Organization, a modest increase in breastfeeding rates could prevent up to 10% of all deaths of children under five. Breastfeeding plays an essential and underestimated role in the treatment and prevention of childhood illness. Breastfeeding benefits both mom and baby. We encourage moms to take advantage of The Sacred Hour and Skin-to-Skin to enhance the breastfeeding experience for mom and baby.
The Benefits of Breastfeeding
- Produced right after birth, colostrum is packed with nutrition
- Provides antibodies and helps fight off illness
- Decreases the risk of SIDS, heart disease, childhood cancers, obesity, stomach infections, ear infections, diabetes, pneumonia, and more
- Saves time; no heating required
- Quicker, smoother recovery after delivery
- Decreases the risk for postpartum depression
- Decreases the risk of ovarian and breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes
The Sacred Hour
The Sacred Hour is the hour immediately after your baby is born and it cannot be recreated. Everything that needs to be checked and done to the baby should be delayed at least until after this hour is up. Moms can talk to their doctors about their preferences in their birth plan.
Breastfeeding with The Sacred Hour
- Creates a bond with your baby
- Baby feels safe, calm, and less fussy
- More likely to breastfeed successfully
- Baby stays the right temperature
- Baby’s blood sugar level remains stable
- Keeping mom and baby together following emergency births and c-sections normalizes the birth
