Living closer to family and where she grew up was one of the reasons Heather Swezey, LIMHP, decided to return to the Midwest after living on the west coast. The opportunity to be a mental health professional at Bluestem Health is one of the many reasons she says coming home was a good decision.

Heather grew up in Omaha, NE. She completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, and went on to receive her Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego in California. Prior to joining Bluestem Health, she was employed at University of California, San Diego Health.

On any given day, Heather sees patients with a wide variety of behavioral health concerns. She also sees primary care patients coping with diagnoses such as diabetes, hypertension, and chronic pain, or who are interested in improving self-management of their disease. Things that affect everyone like sleep and stress are two big issues that she addresses frequently. Heather says that no day is the same because of the variety of issues, and that is what makes her job interesting.

Heather can address many patients' behavioral health needs at the clinic where they are already established and feel comfortable. Working together with the patient and provider, she can help assess if other therapeutic interventions are needed, such as long-term therapy or more intensive substance use treatment. She provides referrals to trusted sources that offer a higher level of care.

One of the values at Bluestem Health that Heather appreciates is its commitment to providing quality care which is evident by its integrative healthcare program. She works closely with primary care providers and feels that is a benefit to patients because the more knowledgeable resources contributing to a goal, the better the outcome. She is grateful that her coworkers are equally committed to bringing the best care to patients. Working together in a collaborative way to connect mental and physical health ensures that Bluestem Health patients get the highest quality care. When it comes to her patients, she believes there should be no limitations on who is able to access healthcare.

When she is not taking care of patients at Bluestem Health, Heather enjoys traveling, especially to roadside attractions like The Largest Thermometer and Carhenge.  She also likes to cook, and to watch reality television such as cooking competitions and game shows.

"I'm really proud of the range of issues that our behavioral health team can address," Heather says. "It doesn't have to be a diagnosis of anxiety, depression, drugs, or alcohol. We can help improve how patients deal with the day-to-day stressors in life, too."

Heather sees patients at Bluestem Health's Main clinic located at 1021 N. 27th Street in Lincoln. To schedule an appointment, call 402-476-1455.
