Marina is the Interpreter/Translator Supervisor at Bluestem Health. The interpreter program at Bluestem Health is unique because it focuses on providing in-person interpretation services, rather than communicating over the phone. This makes all the difference to Bluestem Health patients, who come from all over Lancaster County to use the Interpretation services offered here.
Marina knows that good interpretation takes more than just having a good grasp of language. To be a good interpreter, you must be an extremely good listener that picks up on intent and meaning, as well as every word. It is also important to be aware of the cultural differences behind the languages. Good interpreters need to have a very good knowledge of both the subject-matter and the language. Which means that beyond just the languages they interpret, interpreters at Bluestem Health have a good understanding of clinical abbreviations and jargon so that they can help the patients understand the sometimes complex information.
Interpreters also need to keep their cool and remain relaxed, even in seemingly tough situations. They must make sense of a message composed in one language, while simultaneously constructing and articulating the same message in another tongue. A good interpreter must cope with stress and self-control when dealing with difficult speakers or situations, and they should always remember to maintain the patient’s confidentiality.
Marina loves to work with Lincoln’s underserved community. It gives her the opportunity to make a difference in the way that people feel when they are going through some of the hardest moments in their life.
