Medicaid Doctors

Bluestem Health’s family doctors specialize in providing care to individuals and families covered by Medicaid. In fact, all of Bluestem Health’s providers are enrolled as Medicaid doctors. We’re committed to offering quality healthcare to all our patients, and we know how difficult it can be for patients to navigate Medicaid. We’re always up-to-date with Nebraska Medicaid requirements to give you the best possible care.

What Is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a crucial safety net program designed to provide healthcare coverage to individuals and families with limited financial resources. It operates as a partnership between the federal government and individual states, with each state having some flexibility in administering the program within federal guidelines. Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services details the full range of Medicaid-eligible services here.

What’s New For 2024

Nebraska Medicaid made several important extensions to Medicaid coverage with benefits beginning this year. For example, Nebraska Medicaid extended continuous coverage for all children found newly eligible for Medicaid from six months to a full year. This includes one year of continuous eligibility for kids found eligible at the time of their annual renewal.

Nebraska Medicaid, which is estimated to cover 35% of all births across the state, also moved to ensure better access to healthcare services for mothers. Postpartum coverage increased from 60 days to 12 months, ensuring mothers have access to the care and support they need during a crucial period in their lives.

In the realm of dental care, Nebraska Medicaid now covers the extraction of asymptomatic wisdom teeth. Also known as symptom-free wisdom teeth, it’s estimated that one-third of all wisdom teeth eventually require extraction due to disease. By covering asymptomatic wisdom teeth removal under Medicaid, Nebraska hopes to limit a Medicaid member’s potential for future dental loss.

Finally, Healthy Blue is no longer participating in Nebraska’s Medicaid Managed Care Program. Molina Healthcare of Nebraska is one of the new Medicaid plans available and offers more than 40 years of Medicaid experience. If you need help selecting a new Medicaid Managed Care plan, don’t hesitate to contact our Patient Support Services team. This is a free service to all Bluestem Health patients.

Are You Eligible?

Medicaid eligibility is complex. For Nebraskans ages 19 to 64, Medicaid coverage is generally available for those who earn less than 138% of the federal poverty level (just under $21,000 a year, before taxes, for a single person in 2024). Medicaid financial eligibility is also based on Modified Adjusted Gross Income, which takes tax filing relationships into account to determine eligibility.

You might also be able to qualify for Medicaid at slightly higher incomes if you are 65 years of age or older, a caretaker responsible for children 18 years or younger, a person with a disability, 18 years of age or younger, a pregnant woman, or former foster care youth. Medicaid’s complexity often means it’s helpful to check with experts about your potential benefits.
