It can be difficult to talk about alcohol misuse—especially when it involves someone we care about, or even ourselves. But starting the conversation is often the most important step toward healing. Whether you’re here because you’re concerned about your own drinking or worried about someone close to you, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with alcohol use, and recognizing the signs early on can make all the difference.
What Is Alcohol Use Disorder?
Alcohol use disorder, sometimes referred to as alcoholism, is a medical condition that affects many individuals. It can creep up gradually, making it hard to notice when casual drinking turns into something more serious.
Symptoms of Alcohol Misuse
Here are some common signs that may indicate alcohol misuse:
- Drinking alcohol at all hours of the day/night
- Developing a high tolerance
- Craving the “buzz” and uninhibited feeling from alcohol
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking
- Relationships with family and friends become strained
- Struggles at work or difficulty with other daily responsibilities
Evaluation and Treatment
Recognizing you or a loved one needs help is the first step. At Bluestem Health, our integrated team of providers support individuals facing alcohol use disorder with understanding and respect.
Your journey begins with a visit to one of our primary care providers, who will refer you to our Behavioral Health team. There, you’ll receive a full evaluation so we can create a personalized treatment plan that’s right for you.
We understand that alcohol use disorder can be influenced by other mental health factors, including:
- Family history
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Compassion First
At Bluestem Health, we offer a safe and caring environment to begin your road to recovery. Our team of therapists understands how mental health can be a contributing factor in alcohol use disorder, such as:
- Family History
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Using diagnostic criteria, our therapists will determine whether your condition is mild, moderate, or severe. From there, we’ll help you explore treatment options, which may include counseling, medication, support groups, or, in some cases, inpatient treatment.
