For more than 30 years, John Grandgenett, APRN, Nurse Practitioner, has been taking care of people in some way. He began his career as an Intensive Care nurse working in hospitals across the U.S. as his wife served in the military. It was in 1999 when they relocated to Nebraska. John always knew he wanted to advance his nursing practice by becoming a Nurse Practitioner. He received his Masters in Nursing, with board certification in Family Practice from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Shortly after graduating, he joined the North Lincoln Family Medical Center, now known as Bluestem Health Kreshel Clinic.
John enjoys the variety of patients he sees every day, from newborns to 90 year olds. He’s passionate about providing them with comprehensive healthcare that meets their specific needs. He feels blessed to come to work every day knowing that this is what he was called to do. “I’m happiest when I’m helping others,” John says.
For John, he believes every patient deserves the same high quality care. When his patients have complex health conditions, he is grateful for the relationship he has with his colleagues and the specialty physicians in Lincoln. “Working at this clinic for nearly 20 years, you get to know each other’s strengths,” John says. “I love the fact that we all work as a team and look to each other for expertise when managing a complicated health issue.”
One of the greatest challenges John feels providers face today is trying to help people make changes to improve their quality of life. For some, this can be more than just learning how to eat more healthful or starting an exercise plan; it may involve finding services that are accessible and affordable. He likes that Bluestem Health has many of the necessary services and resources, such as behavioral health specialists, dentists, and diabetes and nutrition educators, that expand the primary care team. “Bluestem Health provides quality care to people that don’t have resources available to them,” John adds.
John grew up in central Iowa. He’s married with three sons, ages 14 to 20, who are involved in sports and other activities that keep them all very busy. Living on an acreage also fills John’s free time when taking care of his four-legged residents: some cattle, a llama, a dog and a cat. He does enjoy working with the 4-H Dog Club in Wahoo where he gets to help with their Obedience and Agility programs.
“As a Family Medicine provider, I want to do everything that I can to help my patients achieve the best possible outcomes to improve their quality of life,” John says.
