When a Toothache Can’t Wait: Bluestem Health’s Emergency Dental Care

We believe in getting to the root of your tooth problem. We offer emergency dental care for people throughout Lincoln who need dental help fast.

toothache pain

If you’ve ever had a bad toothache, you know it doesn’t care what time it is. The pain can hit at two in the afternoon or at two in the morning.

Early morning tooth pain is exactly what happened to Maria. She’s a 34-year-old single mom who works at a meat processing facility. One night, she woke up around 1:40 a.m. with a painful dental infection.

No dentist’s office was open, and missing work could cost Maria her job. The pain was so bad that she went to the emergency room. After a CT scan, some antibiotics, and pain medicine, she was sent home. Her bill came to about $3,600. However, none of those treatments fixed her tooth. A few weeks later, the pain came back, and so did Maria.

If Maria’s story sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And our Emergency Dental Clinic fixes the root of your tooth problem.

Why the ER isn’t the Best Place for a Toothache

Emergency rooms save lives every day, but ER staff aren’t trained to fix teeth, and most have no dental tools on hand. That means when you go to the ER, they usually only treat symptoms and calm the problem down for a little while. You might receive pain pills or antibiotics, but the cavity, infection, or broken tooth is still there; doctors call this “stabilize and refer.”

An ER visit is also expensive. A 2026 report from Creighton University and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services found:

  • Nebraska ERs saw 35,697 visits for dental problems from 2019 to 2023.
  • The average ER bill for a dental visit rose to about $3,198 in 2023.
  • In just five years, those visits added up to about $105 million in charges.

Bottom line: Nebraskans spent a lot of money on care that doesn’t fix the tooth. Nearly half of those visits were from people on Medicaid, who often struggle to find a dentist who can see them quickly.

How Bluestem Health Can Help

We believe a toothache deserves a real fix. Our emergency dental care is here for people in Lincoln who are hurting and need help fast. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, we want to provide everyone with access to care, regardless of income or insurance status. Here’s what that means for you:

  • We treat the problem. Our dental providers can take care of what’s actually causing your pain, like an infected or broken tooth.
  • We accept Medicare and Medicaid. We’re making dental care more accessible by now accepting Nebraska Total Care and UnitedHealthcare Medicaid.
  • We offer a sliding fee scale. If you don’t have insurance, your cost is based on your income and family size. Our patient services team can help you see if you meet the eligibility requirements.
  • We help you keep coming back. After we treat your dental problem, we can help you schedule regular dental checkups to prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones.

Community health centers like ours make a real difference. In 2023 alone, Nebraska’s community health centers saw about 3,250 patients with dental emergencies. That’s thousands of people who got dental care without a trip to the ER.
