Many individuals and families in the Lincoln community rely on Medicaid for their healthcare coverage. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Bluestem Health participates in Nebraska’s Medicaid Program, helping to ensure that patients have access to the care they need. One of the things that makes Bluestem Health unique is its whole-person approach. Patients can often have their medical, dental, and behavioral health needs addressed in one place. As Nebraska’s Medicaid rules change, as of May 1, 2026, we want to make certain our patients keep up to date on coverage options. For those who lost their Medicaid because they do not meet the exemption requirements, or did not complete the work requirement, we offer our Sliding Fee discount program.
For thousands of individuals and families in Lincoln, Medicaid makes it possible to see one of our providers, fill a prescription, or receive high-quality healthcare. Medicaid provides more ability for adults to access coverage—something that can change the trajectory of a person’s health.
Services available to Medicaid patients include:
Our focus is simple: care for everyone who comes to all of our clinics. Whether someone has Medicaid or no insurance, they’ll be welcomed and cared for. With sliding fee options, we help make that possible.
Even when someone has Medicaid, there can still be hurdles—like finding a provider, getting transportation, or navigating the Nebraska Medicaid system. It’s a reminder that coverage is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to staying healthy. At Bluestem Health, our Outreach Team works tirelessly to support patients in a variety of ways, including scheduling appointments at our clinics, assisting eligible individuals in enrolling in Medicaid, and connecting them with resources they may need.
Starting May 1, 2026, Nebraska will require many adults ages 19-64 on Medicaid expansion (also known as Heritage Health)—or do not qualify for an exemption—to demonstrate they are doing one or more of the following to maintain their coverage:
Individuals must complete 80 hours per month of qualifying activity. If someone can’t meet the hours, or isn’t complying with paperwork and reporting, they could be disenrolled, even if they still qualify financially. It’s important to note that not everyone on Medicaid has to meet these requirements.
You may not have to meet the requirements if you:
If you believe you may qualify for a Medicaid exemption, supporting documentation may be required to verify your eligibility.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will first review the information they already have to determine if you meet work requirements or qualify for an exemption. If additional information is needed, they will contact you.
Bluestem Health is here to help you navigate your Medicaid questions. Through our four family medicine clinics, we are strengthening the entire safety net—ensuring individuals and families in our community have access to the coverage and care they need to live healthier lives.
