Meet Shay Piel, Provisional Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

Meet Shay Piel, Provisional Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

In college, Shay Piel was undecided on what her career path would be, or even what population segment she wanted to focus on, but knew she wanted to work with people. Once she got a better understanding of how important social workers are in providing healthcare services, it didn't take her long to decide that working in the mental health field would be a good fit for her.

Shay grew up in Norfolk, NE and graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a Bachelors degree in Social Work. She went on to receive her Masters degree in Social Work at Colorado State University. She also studied at the International School, University of Alicante in Spain for language development and to enhance her worldview. Shay joined Bluestem Health in April 2018 as a Provisional Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker.

Each day, Shay has the pleasure of working with a diverse population, including welcoming refugees from various countries and people of all backgrounds with different experiences. She works closely with primary care physicians to provide care for patients experiencing mental and behavioral health concerns or that are coping with the day-to-day pressures of life. She also works with children and their caregivers that are experiencing behavioral issues. “When patients see their primary care provider, this can be the first time mental and behavioral health concerns are discussed, and providing mental health and behavioral health care in an environment they are already established in and trust is important.”

Shay truly appreciates the teamwork by the Bluestem Health providers as it allows them to coordinate the necessary time and best approach to care for each patient. Through Bluestem Health's integrated services, they are able to provide patients with physical, mental and behavioral health services in one location. She also enjoys partnering with their on-staff interpreters as they work with patients from different countries who speak other languages.

When Shay is not taking care of patients, she spends time with her family, their dog and two cats, and her sister who is going to college in Lincoln. She says a lot of time has been dedicated to the renovation of their house, but when not focused on that project, she enjoys being outside.

Shay wants people to know that mental and behavioral health is just as important as one's physical health. "It's about taking care of you."

Shay sees patients at Bluestem Health's Main clinic located at 1021 N. 17th Street in Lincoln. To schedule an appointment, call 402-476-1455.
