Michael Israel, MD, has always seen himself as a person committed to providing excellent health care to his patients, to serving others in the community, and to being a voice for those who many times aren't able to advocate for themselves. So it was no surprise to those who know Dr. Israel when he was recently recognized as the 2018 Young Physician of the Year by the Nebraska Medical Association. Each year, this recognition is given to only one physician under the age of 40 who has gone above and beyond the basic call of medicine for patients and the community. "This recognition is well deserved and speaks volumes about Dr. Israel as a physician and as an individual," states Brad Meyer, CEO of Bluestem Health in Lincoln. "He is well-liked and respected by his colleagues and staff."
After graduating in 2014 from the Lincoln Medical Education Partnership Family Medicine Residency program, Dr. Israel immediately joined Bluestem Health, Lincoln’s Federally Qualified Health Center, as a Family Medicine physician. Over the past three years, he has helped stabilize Bluestem Health’s cadre of physicians and assisted the organization as it expanded from one clinic to three sites in Lincoln today. "Dr. Israel has been instrumental in helping us provide more access to care through our clinic locations," adds Meyer. Along with caring for his patients, Dr. Israel is the liaison between Administration and the physicians and other providers in his role as Chief Medical Officer.
In addition to the work he does at Bluestem Health, Dr. Israel has volunteered for the Project Homeless Coalition and has served as a past medical director for the Lancaster County Corrections Center. Dr. Israel currently serves as medical director for KED Plasma Center and is a board member on Lincoln’s American Cancer Society Leadership Advisory Board. Always looking for ways to grow professionally, he recently completed the Nebraska Medical Association Leadership training. In November, he will serve on the Lancaster County Medical Society’s Board of Directors.
"I feel honored, humbled, and grateful to win this award," Dr. Israel expresses with heartfelt appreciation. "The practice of medicine is a team effort, and if it wasn’t for all the amazing people that surround me in every aspect of my life, I would not be able to pursue all the avenues that I have to help people. I like to think that this award recognizes those people as well."
